Founded in 1996, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University leverages the university’s interdisciplinary strengths to address frontier issues in environmental science and meet national strategic needs. The department has formed four integrated academic clusters: Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, and Environmental Ecosystem Management. Its research focuses on three key areas: Atmospheric Environmental Chemistry, Environment and Health, and Regional Environmental Systems Engineering and Carbon Neutrality. Together, these support a comprehensive academic framework that connects pollutant formation and transport, health impacts, and policy responses.

The department hosts several national and provincial-level research platforms. It was selected as a “Double First-Class” discipline by the Ministry of Education in 2017. In 2021, its Environmental Science program was designated a National First-Class Undergraduate Program. These achievements have contributed to Fudan’s top global rankings in Environmental Science, Ecology (top 0.1%), and Earth Sciences (top 1%) in ESI. With growing international recognition, the department is now a leading institution in environmental science and engineering education and research.
